Sprint Pipeline begins construction on underground salt storage center
Sprint Pipeline Services LP’s (Sprint Pipeline) recently commenced construction on an underground salt storage center. The center will consist of multiple salt caverns and pipeline infrastructure to be constructed on a phased-in basis. The caverns will be created in two salt domes situated on over 400 acres in Smith County, Mississippi. This project is ideally located to act as a bridge between the neighboring shale plays and the higher valued Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast markets.
The first phase of the project has been consistently ahead of schedule and Sprint Pipeline is meeting all goals agreed upon when the project commenced. Sprint Pipeline civil crews have poured approximately 10,000 cubic yards of concrete, to date, in some very challenging conditions. Rain and tornadoes have plagued the project since late February and in spite of these conditions and constant material shortages, Sprint Pipeline is ahead of schedule and the crews have provided all of the services required for the project.
Sprint Pipeline’s new coating division applied the underground coating for the project with no problems or delays. The new spray equipment also worked efficiently with little or no waste of material. Sprint Pipeline’s paint crews are working along with the fabrication crews to ensure all fabrication spools and items that would be difficult to reach after installation are coated prior to installation.
Sprint Pipeline’s new torque crew will perform the installation and torque services for the leaching phase of the project.
Sprint Pipeline is also providing overall project management for the construction of Phase Two, which includes a 34 mile, 24” pipeline header system.
Sprint Pipeline project management has been instrumental in keeping materials flowing for all phases of the project. Along with the company’s alliance partner, Englobal Construction Services, Sprint Pipeline is also managing all of the document control functions, which includes but is not limited to, Material Test Reports, blueprint revision printing and updating, materials storage and handling, security, and drilling support services.
Sprint Pipeline’s goals for the upcoming years are to continue expansion into specialized services such as the torque and testing services, expanding our abilities into tapping and line stopping services, nitrogen testing and purging services, and expanding the current services such as Hydro-Vac Excavation and Mobile Crane.
