Safety and Compliance
Safety and Compliance is of the utmost concern at Sprint Pipeline. The company strives to ensure that all federal, state, and local regulations and standards are met on each job site, each day. From the field level up to its managing partners, Sprint Pipeline creates an atmosphere where safety is part of the company culture.
Safe and Smart at Sprint – Sprint’s Highly Structured Safety Incentive Program
Sprint empowers its employees to be responsible for their own safety as well as the safety of those around them through its safety incentive program – “Safe and Smart at Sprint”. The program motivates all employees to believe in and act safely at all times. Sprint Pipeline’s consistently low incident rate is the strongest indicator of the “Safe and Smart at Sprint” program’s success. The program includes:
- Daily job safety analysis
- Daily tailgate safety meetings
- Company wide, all-employee quarterly safety meetings
- Individual recognition for safe behavior each month
- Crew recognition for safe behavior on projects
- Annual cash incentive and recognition for our safe employees
DOT and OSHA Compliance
To ensure safe, reliable, and environmentally sound work, Sprint Pipeline strictly adheres to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Qualification of Pipeline Personnel Regulation.
- Sprint Pipeline complies with the Office of Pipeline Safety of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Qualification of Pipeline Personnel Regulation (49 CFR Part 192 Subpart N and Part 195 Subpart G).
- Sprint Pipeline complies with 49 CFR Parts 40 and 199 through Sprint Pipeline’s drug and alcohol abuse prevention program - approved by the National Compliance Management Service (NCMS).
- Sprint Pipeline enjoys memberships at many local Safety Councils where our company information is maintained and updated routinely so that our employees can receive specialized safety training for our customers.
- Safety statistics and safety policies for Sprint Pipeline are routinely reviewed/audited by our customers – the results can be found at the various Safety Council databases and ISNetWorld/Veriforce databases.
Operator Qualification
Ensuring employees are qualified to perform their job accurately and within compliance is key to creating and maintaining a safe job site. Sprint Pipeline uses direct physical assessments and written assessments to determine our employee’s ability to perform identified tasks. The general list of covered tasks performed by OQ qualified employees at Sprint are as follows:
- Prepare surface and apply atmospheric coatings
- Apply and repair external coating on buried or submerged pipe
- Repair shorted casings
- Place and maintain line markers
- Provide security for pipeline facilities
- Backfill a trench
- Provide temporary marking of buried pipeline prior to excavation
- Inspect conditions of Right-of-Way
- Inspect navigable waterway crossings
- Inspect breakout tanks
- Inspect valves
- Perform inspection activities for tie-ins, pipe replacements or other components connected to existing pipeline
- Perform inspections following excavation activities and leak surveys after blasting
- Conduct pressure test
- Inspect existing pipe following movement
- Measure clearance from existing pipe to underground structures installed by excavation, boring and directional drilling
- Launching/receiving in-line inspection device
- Install or repair support structures on existing above-ground components
- Perform general pipeline repair activities
- Moving in-service pipe
- Perform maintenance welding on pipelines
- Handle abandoning, safe disconnect, purging and sealing of pipeline facilities

NCCER Accredited Assessment Center
To further facilitate DOT Operator Qualification requirements, Sprint Pipeline has become an Accredited Training Sponsor (ATS) and Accredited Assessment Center (AAC) with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Sprint employs several NCCER Master Trainers and several assessment proctors. Sprint Pipeline also has several certified Veriforce evaluators.
